EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DOG FLEAS AND HOW TO ELIMINATE THEM

Many parasites can affect dogs and the most popular by far is the flea. Despite being difficult to detect, these insects transmit many diseases through flea bites on dogs that can be dangerous.

Fleas, if not treated in time, become an annoying problem.

Recognizing them, knowing the symptoms of their presence, and learning to eliminate them properly, will be of great help for the dog and the entire family.

What are fleas?

Fleas are tiny insects, and if not controlled quickly, they easily become a pest.

The worst part is that, where there is one, there are many more because their reproduction process is very fast.

And these multiply much more, when there is a pet.

However, it does not mean that if a house doesn’t have any pets there is 0% chance of fleas: gardens can also be attacked by these annoying insects.

Of course, these could also bite people.

Symptoms to detect that a dog has fleas

When a flea infests or bites a dog, they leave certain lesions on the skin.

The adopter must be vigilant to recognize the symptoms and attack the fleas as quickly as possible.

Some symptoms are:

Itching or pruritus.
Restlessness in the dog.
General deterioration of the dog.
Strange and dirty fur. This is a very common sign because black specks are visible on the coat, stuck to the skin. These specks are the feces that fleas leave on their host.
Scratching excessively, especially on the face, ears, near the tail and groin.
Anemia. When the flea bites, it sucks the blood out of the dog. In that sense, depending on the severity of the flea attack, the dog could even have anemia. The anemia that dogs can present is more common in puppies and the elderly. This blood-sucking carried out by the flea will not only cause anemia, but your dog could be in danger of death.

Note: Fleas, being so small, can easily hide in the middle of the dog’s fur, so the adopter would not be aware that they are present. That is why detecting the symptoms on time could save a dog’s life.

How are fleas spread?

It’s typical to think that the way of contagion is between dogs, that fleas jump from one host to another, but that is not entirely true.

The most common contagion of fleas occurs through the environment, even within the same home.

When the flea reaches its host, it feeds on its blood.

Then it lays its eggs on the dog, but they usually fall to the ground and, when they are larvae, they hide in places in the house such as baseboards or carpets.

How to detect the presence of fleas at home and how to eliminate them?

If you have fleas in your home, it’s crucial to know how to detect them to attack them as soon as possible and prevent them from affecting more than can be controlled.

A trick to determine whether or not there is a flea infection is to walk around your house in white socks, especially on carpets.

Then you have to check the sock to see how many fleas you found.

To eliminate them from the house:

Wash all toys, clothes, or dog beds in the washing machine at a high temperature.
If you have a vacuum cleaner, vacuuming hard-to-reach spaces is recommended. Corners, door frames, sofa, mattresses, among others, should be included.
Use a flea insecticide indoors. You must follow the instructions for proper use.

From your dog:

Antiparasitics.
Flea collars.
Sprays.

It is crucial not only to attack the adult fleas but mostly when they are still in the eggs before being larvae.

WHY DO DOGS HOWL AND WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you have a dog at home, it is not unusual to hear them howl at some point. But have you ever wondered why dogs howl?

The howl is a very characteristic sound that dogs make, which allows them to express themselves or communicate something.

However, howling can have different causes that adopters are unaware of.

Many owners believe that howling means something bad, the first time they hear their dog do it.

All animals have ways of communicating. Dogs, in this case, learn to communicate with their adopter in different ways, and one of them is usually howling. Also, cry or moan. However, howls can have different meanings, keep reading and see what we mean.

Why do dogs howl like wolves?

Dogs are descendants of wolves, so they have many similar features and characteristics. Some are hunting, howling, among others.

When you think of a howl, you might immediately associate it with wolves since it is one of its outstanding characteristics.

Wolves live in packs, and they howl so that others can hear them. Also, to alert danger, communicate, or even celebrate in a meeting of many wolves in the pack.

Why is my dog howling?

As we’ve mentioned, dogs can howl for different reasons.

Feeling alone:

Loneliness can affect a dog more than you think. Many people keep their dog alone, without company for many hours, which will cause the dog not to feel well.

This can cause the dog to howl for a long time trying to get some attention.

This type of howl could have a different tone, sad and whiny. They will sound different from the typical high-pitched and powerful howl.

Stress or fright:

When a dog is stressed, he will likely howl. It’s a way of asking for attention, so take him for a walk.

Joy or celebration:

Just as dogs can howl with stress, they can also howl with happiness. Some dogs howl, for example, when the family comes home at the end of the day.

It’s a way of celebrating that their pack is back home, all together.

Injury or pain:

If your dog doesn’t usually howl and suddenly they start doing it, you must rule out the possibility of a physical problem or an injury. This is not very common, but it’s possible.

It can be something serious, and you must be able to consider it.

If the dog continues to howl non-stop, something is definitely not right, and that is a solid reason to take them to the vet as soon as possible

Imitation:

If your dog is calm and suddenly hears other dogs howling, your dog will imitate them by instinct.

Dogs can often howl when they hear the sounds of firefighters, ambulances, or police cars, associating them with the sound of a howling dog, so they repeat it.

Likewise, if you make a high-pitched sound, the dog may mimic it by howling. For example, if you have a birthday gathering at home and start singing, many dogs “sing-along” with the family the birthday song.

This is actually a very common cause. Indeed there must be a dog in your neighborhood that begins to howl after hearing the sirens.

We hope this was very helpful to you and we kindly invite you to check out our website if you’re interested in grooming or adoption services. Click here!

8 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR DOG COOL IN THE SUMMER

Intense heat can reduce dogs’ appetite and the desire to move, but it can also have more serious consequences, such as the dreaded heat stroke.

In this article, you will find some tips to protect your dog from the summer heat

1. Keep them hydrated

Leave fresh and clean water available 24 hours a day and periodically check that there is water in the drinker and the drinker is not exposed to the sun. In summer, it’s easier for the water to evaporate or simply heat up.

2. Protect it from the sun

The dog must have a cool place to rest, especially in the warmest hours of the day.

3. Refresh the environment

Using a fan or air conditioning can be an excellent measure to lower the room temperature.

4. Get them wet

Wetting them, especially on the head and trunk, can help lower the dog’s temperature. Dogs do not sweat like people, and the water they get wet with evaporates, causing a similar effect to sweating. Putting a dog pool in the garden is also a good option for the dog to cool off.

5. Adapt your bed

Wetting them, especially on the head and trunk, can help lower the dog’s temperature. Dogs do not sweat like people, and the water they get wet with evaporates, causing a similar effect to sweating. Putting a dog pool in the garden is also a good option for the dog to cool off.

6. Cut their hair

It’s not about shaving it, but if your dog has long hair, trimming it, especially on the belly, can be another measure to help you control the temperature.

The important thing is to leave about 2-3 centimeters in length since the hair partly protects from heat and sunburn.

7. Don’t do physical activities in the hottest moments

It’s essential to take the dog for a walk when it is less hot and avoid intense exercise.

8. Feed him when it’s cooler

When the dog has less appetite due to the heat, you can feed them in the less warm moments of the day, such as first thing in the morning or at night.

DO DOGS DREAM LIKE US HUMANS?

The answer is yes: dogs dream when they sleep, just like people.

So if you have a dog and you have ever heard them make strange sounds when sleeping or moving, it means that they’re dreaming.

Several studies have indicated that, while dogs are sleeping, their brain waves are similar to people’s.

Dogs go through the same stages of sleep. Dreaming even helps to reinforce everything they have learned during the day.

Do all dogs dream the same way?

Small dogs and older dogs spend more time in REM sleep.

This is the deepest phase of sleep.

This REM phase is the dream phase, and because they spend more time in it, they dream more, although their dreams are short.

The opposite is the case with larger and adult dogs.

For example, mini-breed dogs, such as a Chihuahua, can dream once every 10 minutes, while a large breed dog, such as a Golden Retriever, can dream every 90 minutes, only once.

Dogs that are adults can spend between 50 and 60% of the time sleeping, as long as it’s in a place where they feel comfortable and safe.

On the other hand, dogs that are puppies need to sleep much longer. They can sleep between 80% and 90% of the time.

This is because puppies need to grow, and the hormone that helps growth is secreted during times of sleep.

Note: Puppies dream more because they are exposed to much more stimulation during the day. Everything is constant learning for them. They learn something new and have new experiences everyday.

Phases of dog sleep

Sleep is an active activity because, during sleep, their brain is always working.

In the dream, postural relaxation occurs.

It’s also the time where sensory thresholds are raised. This allows the dog to disconnect from its environment and reality to sleep. There are two phases:

Slow sleep (NON-REM):

This first phase is also called numbness and is where the transition from waking state occurs. It’s a short and light cap and comprises about 10 minutes of the complete sleep cycle.

REM sleep phase or deep sleep:

It’s at this time that the dog goes to sleep soundly, and dreams occur.

In this phase, which means “Rapid Eyes Movement” or “Rapid Eye Movement”, the dog’s breathing will be irregular and rapid and, as the name suggests, you can see how the eyeballs move quickly under the eyelids.

Note: In this deep sleep phase, the dog picks up a lot of information from his environment due to the activity of his brain. This brain activity is the same as when the dog is awake.

What can dogs dream about?

Pursue something

Bark and chase

The face of its owner

They may also have nightmares. In that case, it’s essential to:

-Not wake them up. It’s best to wait for the dog to calm down.

-Pet them. In this way, the dog will feel your presence and will be able to relax.

-Call them by their name using a soft, calm tone of voice little by little. This will help to calm them or to wake them up without abruptness.

-When the dog wakes up and is calmer, they can be allowed to sleep again so that they can relax.

Remember, it’s normal for dogs to dream, don’t panic.

10 THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR DOG AT HOME

Dogs are very routinary animals to the extreme of completely changing their behaviour according to their routine, especially if their routine changes all of a sudden.

To avoid any bad behaviours that can be caused by the lack of activities, like excessive barking, destroying things, or biological needs inside of the house, etc, we’re going to tell you some ideas you can implement in your dog’s routine at home to avoid any type of emotional issues like anxiety or depression (yes, dogs experience it too).

Train them

Take the time you’re at home, or maybe if you work from home and don’t know what to do with them, and start training them more. Not only how and where to do their biological needs, but also some good tricks that can be fun to learn.

Hide their toys

You can lock them in the kitchen, hide their toys in the living room and let them out to find them. Of course, you need to do this several times until they understand the game.

When they find the toy, congratulate them with a treat or an applause.

Start with a low difficulty level and increase it from there. It’ll be more fun for them.

Play hide and seek

Yes, play with them as if they’re humans, they understand perfectly how to play this, as long as you teach them. Hide yourself and let them find you.

If they can’t find you at all, try whistling to see if they have an idea of where you are. They get extremely happy when they find you.

Watch TV

Yep, you read right.

There is such a thing. TV for dogs.

There are some dogs that will watch whatever you watch, but if that doesn’t work, look up on Youtube: “Videos for dogs” and you’ll find a large variety of fun visuals for them to be entertained.

Agility games

You can use some of the tools you already have at home, like a broom or boxes to build this set of games.

Anything you can do for them to jump and play around.

Use your imagination and make your living room or better yet, your yard, a place of endless fun.

Intense workouts

Do you have a big house? Or maybe a yard? It’s perfect for this!

If your dog has endless energy, you can do intense workouts with them. But what do we mean?

Throwing a ball for a couple hours or maybe going up and down the stairs. These exercises are simple but can tire them out for sure.

Hunting

You can collect a group of things around the house and teach your dog to find them all. At the end of the game you can congratulate them with a treat. They love these kinds of games.

Change their toys every once in a while

When we only give them one toy to play with, even if it’s their favorite, they could get bored. Of course it all depends on your dog’s personality. However, we always suggest changing your dog’s toys frequently so they get more stimulation from them.

Visual stimulation

One of the most fun activities for them, believe it or not, is to look out the window. They love to see what’s happening outside, even if they don’t have the desire to go out themselves.

Somehow, they get so entertained they can spend hours there. So, always be sure to have some kind of furniture or box they can climb on top of to make this view accessible.

With our imagination, we can make a dog’s routine magical and return all this love they give us. Start implementing all these fun games so they always have something to look forward to, just like us.

REAL FACTS ABOUT POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DOGS

We bet that whenever you read or hear “Dangerous dogs,” you automatically think about breeds like Pit Bulls or Dobermanns, right?

Well, after you finish this article, you might think twice about it.

Any dog can be dangerous, even a tiny Chihuahua.

But there is a PDD law, which means “Potentially dangerous dogs” because they’re more prone to harm a person and even cause death due to their size and strength.

However, we shouldn’t ignore that what determines a dangerous dog isn’t the breed but the environment the dog lives in and its education.

Now, a German Shepherd, for example, isn’t part of this PDD law, and it’s one of the dog breeds that has caused more deaths and attacks. Why?

Let’s see first which are the PDD breeds.

PDD Breeds

According to the law, these are potentially dangerous dogs, and you need a special license to adopt them:

  1. Pitbull Terrier
  2. Bull Terrier
  3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  4. American Staffordshire Terrier
  5. Rottweiler
  6. Argentine Dogo
  7. Brazilian Mastiff
  8. Japanese Mastiff
  9. Akita
  10. Dobermann Pinscher
  11. Dogue de Bordeaux

The characteristics that put these breeds in this category:

  1. Strong muscles, robust aspect, athletic body, agility, and resistance
  2. Powerful presence
  3. Short hair
  4. Thoracic circumference between 60 and 80 centimeters, height at the withers between 50 and 70 centimeters, and weight greater than 20 kg.
  5. Voluminous, robust, and round head, muscular cheeks, strong jaw, and deep mouth
  6. Wide, strong, and short neck.
  7. Solid, broad, deep chest, arched ribs, and short, muscular loin.

Statistics

PDD breeds, unfortunately, don’t have a good reputation.

Statistics don’t lie, but we know that the animal is not at fault.

The interesting fact is these dogs generally attack more kids than adults because kids don’t know how to treat them properly nor understand any danger signs.

So, potentially dangerous dogs have to be adopted by experienced and loving owners that know how to raise them and educate them.

All dogs are potentially dangerous.

Just like humans, all dogs are potentially dangerous. If somebody gets us to our limit, we can also react violently. The difference is we have rational minds, and dogs don’t.

They don’t have the intention to harm anybody. However, if some factors come together, like stress, anxiety, anger, and lack of education, they might drive dogs to attack and defend themselves.

And again, it doesn’t have to do with the breed.

If a dog attacks once, that doesn’t mean he’s going to do it again. A lot of factors are at play.

So, what do you think now about “dangerous” dogs?

Let’s stop hate against certain breeds, and let’s focus more on who the owner is and the dog’s behavior.

WHY DO DOGS RUN AWAY AND HOW TO AVOID IT

You might hear frequently about missing dogs, which is very unfortunate. But the thing is, there are many dogs that are  prone to do so, depending on many factors.

Why do dogs run away?

If the dog’s healthy mentally and physically, it’s very unlikely that they’ll run away.

That means a dog that doesn’t stress out, that’s constantly doing physical activities, that has contact with the outside world, other dogs and people. A healthy dog is a dog with constant stimulation and doesn’t feel the need to run away from home to get freedom.

So, the reasons for a dog to run away are almost always emotional reasons, they might go out to look for their needs elsewhere. Another reason is when they’re in heat.

A female dog in heat can run away to go look for mating and a male dog can run away to look for this female in heat, even if they’re miles apart.

Another possibility might be a very scary noise. It can make them run away aimlessly. For example, fireworks (their worst nightmare).

If your dog doesn’t have the proper education yet, they might run away to just wander around. If they don’t follow orders, they won’t answer your call. That’s why it’s important you train them properly.

You have to keep in mind that many untrained dogs run away to get to know the world, but when they want to come back home, they can’t find the way. They’ll usually want to come back, but don’t know how and that’s when they get completely lost.

How can we keep our dogs from running away?

Put yourself in your dog’s position. Would you like to be locked up your whole life? Probably not.

Well, it’s very important you always make sure your dog gets those walks they need. Fill their needs and you’ll never have to experience this unfortunate event.

Usually, we recommend you sterilize your dog, this avoids many future problems. So, you don’t have to worry about them running away because of that.

The best way to keep your dog from running away is to train them properly and have security measures at home. But the most important thing is  giving them love and quality of life. They’ll never want to leave you!

Here are some tips for them to never run away:

how them lots of love

Teach them the boundaries they can’t surpass

Show them a treat and run away so they follow you

Go out for walks with them everyday if you can (that way you give them the stimulation they need, under supervision)

WHY YOU MUST LET YOUR DOG HAVE WINDOW VIEW

One of dogs favorite moments is sitting next to the window as soon as they get up in the morning.

Their access should be easy, because they actually do entertain themselves watching what’s happening outside… for hours.

But why?

For dogs, looking out the window means socializing with the outside world. But when they don’t go out as much or just don’t have any contact with many people or other dogs, they tend to get overwhelmed by the amount of stimulation they’re getting from it, which leads to them barking or act wild in general.

What are the benefits of an accessible window view for your dog?

  1. Avoid them to feel locked
  2. They feel like they’re in control
  3. They get very entertained
  4. It stimulates their mind
  5. They don’t feel completely alone when you leave
  6. They love higher spots

How can you give them access if you don’t have a specially designed window for dogs? Maybe it’s just not possible because you don’t have any furniture for them to climb on top of, or  windows are too high.

There are many ways you can do this. Get yourself some pieces of wood or maybe a chair near the window, so they can climb on top of it.

This is very important for them not to feel completely isolated when you leave them alone.

You can also buy small stairs made for dogs, there are many stores that sell it.

Anyway you do it, just let them have this. It’s very important for their mental health, though it might not look like it.

Decreases anxiety, boredom, depression, negative emotions overall.

HOW TO TRIM DOG’S NAILS AT HOME – TIPS AND TRICKS

Trimming dogs’ nails can be as easy as making a cereal or as hard as your worst nightmare.

It all depends on the personality of your dog and their previous experiences.

The trick here is to create a habit where after we trim their nails they get a treat, just like any other training.

However, this doesn’t always work, there are some puppies that have to be sedated first so we can trim their nails… Yes, to that extreme.

Trimming their nails depends a lot on their past experiences. Sometimes, when families adopt dogs, they don’t always know what they’ve been through.

It’s also important to understand the right way to trim their nails, it’s not as simple as trimming your own.

There are certain ways that help dogs feel safer and calmer.

If you get a puppy from a very young age and their first experiences on trimming nails are safe and calm, they will always associate it with good emotions, moreso if you involve a treat.

If you don’t do it properly and maybe they bleed a little or trim it in the wrong place, they might develop some trauma.

How can you trim your dog’s nails safely?

Our bulldogs are always eager and love to go on new adventures due to their high energy level. His breed requires satisfactory mental stimulation and an amount of exercise. You don’t need a halictid while having a bulldog. We provide the best puppies for sale in Kendall, Florida. Our bulldogs love to spend their most of time jumping and playing.

  1. The first step is to find a very calm and quiet place where interruptions don’t happen. You must find a very pleasant place.
  2. The dog mustn’t be excited, he must be calm, maybe try to pet him softly so he can relax, and show them the trimming tool while you do so. That way, they associate the petting with the tool.
  3. Have all the tools ready for trimming. It’s important to have the scissors, the nail file ready for the finishing touches after trimming. That way you can get rid of rough edges and leave them softer.
  4. Cut the nail very slowly and without any rush. When your dog’s nail is white and has a black dot, that’s where you have to stop, so you don’t damage their tissue. This is a pink line inside of the nail. A very easy way to know exactly how much to trim is to see how much nail is left over when your dog is standing on the ground. That way you can trim them at ground level.

Otherwise, if your dog’s nail is black, it is very hard to see where the blood vessels start. So you should always be careful how much you’re trimming. In these cases, it’s best to trim just a little bit, enough for the nail not to exceed ground level.

The ideal trim is a very straight cut.

It’s very important you take your dog’s toe from the top so they don’t move when you’re trimming their nails.

You always have to remember to cut from a minimum of 3mm from the root of the nail.

IMPORTANT: Dogs nails have blood vessels and nerves within them, so if you don’t cut them properly, you might hurt them.

What are the best tools to trim your dog’s nails?

We mostly recommend getting a nail clipper specially made for dogs. Or as a last resource, common scissors.

The thing is, when you use stuff not made for dogs, like human nail clippers or common scissors you might hurt your dog.

Here are some final tips when trimming dogs nails:

-Make a habit of showing your dog the trimming tool as something good and not threatening

-When it comes the moment of trimming for the first time, make it a pleasant experience for him. Otherwise they will associate it with something bad

-You must be calm so your dog sees everything is okay

-Patience is key

Of course the best way to trim your dog’s nails will always be to take them to the vet if you don’t feel confident enough to do them yourself, as you might make a mistake that could cost you your dog’s trauma.

We, at Nessy’s Puppies, have grooming services so we can always receive your special pup and have the perfect setting to make it a pleasant experience for them.
